A cryolipolysis console works by controlling temperature and vacuum precisely, so its maintenance programme is mostly about confirming that both still behave as designed. The failure that matters is rarely dramatic. Building the PM schedule

Start from the manufacturer’s documentation for the specific console and software version, then organise the work into three buckets rather than copying a schedule from another clinic. Cooling system checks

The cooling system is the console’s defining function, and it is the part where a slow deterioration is easiest to miss. What the checks cover depends on the platform ¡ª the manual may specify temperature verification, coolant condition, or a system performance test ¡ª but the purpose is constant: to establish that the console still reaches and holds what it is set to.

Two practical notes. First, cooling performance is affected by ambient conditions and by the applicator in use, so a check performed in a hot room with a warm applicator tells you less than one performed consistently. Second, where the manual defines coolant as an authorised, specified product, use it; a substitute coolant is a change to a system the manufacturer validated, and it will not appear in any service documentation as a legitimate configuration.

Vacuum and applicator checks

Vacuum is the second controlled variable, and its failure modes are equally quiet. Checks should establish that the vacuum is drawn and held as expected, and that the applicator’s interfaces ¡ª cups, seals and connectors ¡ª are sound. Seals in particular wear gradually: an applicator that holds vacuum in a test may still perform differently with a patient’s tissue drawn into it.

  • Cup and seal condition, including deformation and surface damage.
  • Connector and cable integrity along the length and at the strain relief.
  • Vacuum performance measured the way the manual describes, not estimated by feel.
  • Cleanliness of the cooling interfaces and any gel-contact surfaces.
  • Labeling present, legible and matching the console’s supported set.

Alarms and self-tests

Run the console’s own self-test and verify that alarms and indicators behave as the manual describes. A self-test that passes is evidence about the subsystems it covers, not a general clearance, which is why alarm verification is recorded separately rather than summarised as “self-test passed”. Documentation that survives audit

A defensible maintenance record contains the console’s identity, the checks performed with reference to the procedure, any measured values, the test equipment used and its calibration status, the date and performer, and the outcome. Where an applicator was tested, record which one ¡ª applicators are individual assets, and a console-level record that does not name them cannot answer a later question about a specific applicator.

Keep the record with the clinic’s own maintenance file rather than only with the service provider. When an accreditation question or a warranty claim arrives, the clinic’s ability to answer it depends on records it holds, not on records it can request from someone else.

Escalation to qualified service

Some findings are operator-level, some are service-level, and the boundary is drawn by the manufacturer’s documentation rather than by how difficult the task looks. Cleaning and visual inspection belong in the first category. Cooling performance verification, vacuum testing, alarm verification and electrical safety belong in the second, and the manufacturer’s documentation is explicit that unauthorised modification or repair of a console can create unsafe conditions or impaired performance.

Where a check is outside your team’s scope, the correct action is to quarantine the console, record the finding, and route it to qualified service ¡ª not to test it into a temporary pass. A device that is returned to service on an informal check is a device whose maintenance record no longer describes its condition.

How often should the console be serviced?

At the intervals the manufacturer’s documentation states for your model, adjusted by your own usage and risk policy. Published intervals differ between platforms, which is why the schedule should reference the manual rather than a generic checklist.

Can we do the maintenance ourselves?

Operator-level checks are designed for trained clinic staff. Cooling, vacuum and electrical checks belong with qualified personnel following the manufacturer’s procedure, and any intervention that opens or modifies the console should be avoided entirely by unqualified staff.

What is the most useful thing to record?

The console identity and the applicators tested, with measured values where the procedure produces them. Without those, a maintenance record cannot be matched to the specific asset later.
