Surgical & OR Equipment
In theatre, compatibility failures cost cases, not parts.
One hundred and eleven articles on surgical equipment: energy devices, scopes, instruments, sterilisation and the robotic platforms that tie them together.
- 111 articles across five decisions
- Generator, probe and instrument compatibility
- Sterilisation and reprocessing governance

Pick the equipment decision
Surgical procurement fails at the interfaces: probe to generator, instrument to scope, tray to steriliser.
Energy & electrosurgery
Generators, modes, probes and the consumable tail. Take this route when a console decision is really a probe decision.
Scopes & instruments
Laparoscopy, endoscopy, resection and biopsy. Take this route when the platform is bought for a procedure mix.
Sterilisation & reprocessing
Trays, autoclaves, single-use governance and audit. Take this route when the constraint is the CSSD rather than the theatre.
Compatibility is the specification
A generator that cannot drive the probes you own is the wrong generator, whatever its output rating says.
Probe and instrument compatibility
Before comparing consoles, confirm which probes, instruments and single-use items each one accepts, and whether those items will still be supplied in three years. Compatibility drives the per-procedure cost far more than the console price does.
The consumable tail
Per-procedure consumables are where a surgical platform earns or loses its budget. Price them at your own case mix, not at the vendor’s reference procedure, and include the instruments that arrive with the platform but are consumed within a year.
Robotic and minimally invasive platforms
These are bought for a procedure programme, and their instrument limits decide whether the programme is viable.
Instrument limits and use counts
Robotic instruments carry defined use limits, and remaining-use counts change the economics of every case. Model the instrument spend per procedure before the platform approval, because it is the number that decides whether the programme pays.
OR build-out and workflow
A minimally invasive programme needs room layout, imaging integration, turnover time and storage that the capital request usually omits. Buying the console first and discovering the room problem afterwards is the most expensive sequence available.
Sterilisation and reprocessing governance
Reprocessing decisions are governance decisions with a sterilisation step attached.
Single-use and reuse policy
Whether a single-use device may be reprocessed is a governance question before it is a technical one, and the audit trail follows the decision. Hospitals that document the policy pass the audit; those that document the practice do not.
Validation and traceability
Autoclave validation, load records and instrument traceability are what prove a sterile set was sterile. The records also carry the recall path when a batch is questioned, which is why they belong in the equipment specification rather than in the CSSD alone.
Four things that decide a surgical equipment purchase
Each one is settled before the capital approval.
Interface compatibility
Which probes and instruments the platform accepts, and how long those will be supplied.
Cost per procedure
Consumables and instrument limits at your own case mix, not at a reference caseload.
Room and workflow fit
Layout, imaging integration, turnover and storage. The console is the smallest part of the programme.
Sterilisation and traceability
Validation records and the recall path, specified with the equipment rather than added later.
